The Luminaries Light Show is by far my favorite Elon Tradition. This is my favorite tradition because it was the time at Elon during my freshman year where I first noticed that Elon truly became my home. The Luminaries was a simple yet extremely meaningful celebration because it brought the entire Elon community together during a time when people were feeling particularly on edge during finals week. It made me realize that even during the most stressful times, often when we are most consumed by our own lives and struggles, it is important to look around and notice all of the things you are blessed with and have to be thankful for. To me, the Luminaries emphasized the true importance of the holidays and made me realize just how lucky I am to be at a place like Elon.
My most memorable Elon experience was working as an orientation leader. As an orientation leader I got to meet hundreds of incredible people that I may otherwise not have met due to different interests in majors and extracurricular activities. Becoming an orientation leader not only allowed me to meet new people and hear about incredible Elon experiences apart from my own, but it gave me the privilege to welcome a new group of students to a place that I know they would soon love, cherish, and call their home.
I chose Elon for a multitude of reasons; yet the most important was that I immediately felt that Elon was a place I truly belonged. I first looked at Elon because of the perfect size, great weather, beautiful campus, and academic opportunities. Although each of these aspects is still at the forefront of my mind, over the years I have realized that Elon is less about the beauty and statistics and more about the people and the experiences. If someone were to tell me four years ago that I would be conducting research, studying about in South Africa, and making new meaningful relationships each and every day I would have never believed them, yet now it is something I cannot imagine my life without.
